David Gaus, Executive Director of Andean Health and Development, received the 2010 Social Entrepreneur Award for Latin America at the World Economic Forum in Cartagena, Colombia, on April 8th. The World Economic Forum is a Geneva, Switzerland-based foundation best known for its annual meeting in Davos which brings together top business leaders, international political leaders, selected intellectuals and journalists to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world, including health and the environment.
The Schwab Foundation recognized David for this award because of his “Rural Hospital Model,” which emphasizes the provision of quality health care on the ground now and the education of the future’s leaders in rural health. The Schwab Foundation identifies and advances the missions of the world’s true innovators.
Watch David accept this award at the ceremony! Best to skip ahead to 4:45.

Dr. David Gaus, Executive Director of Andean Health and Development, just received the 2010 Social Entrepreneur Award for Latin America by the Schwab Foundation. He is currently at the World Economic Forum in Cartagena, Colombia, accepting the award.
The Schwab Foundation identifies and advances the missions of the world’s true innovators. This is great achievement for Dr. Gaus and for Andean Health & Development (AHD), who have started a model to build self-sustaining health infrastructure in Ecuador. AHD provides high quality care to patients today, while emphasizing the education of tomorrow’s Ecuadorian doctors and nurses.
He has already climbed six of the world’s “7 Summits.” Everest is John’s final and 7th summit, and he is climbing it to raise funds and awareness for Andean Health and Development’s new hospital project in Santo Domingo, Ecuador.
John left today to start the trek to base camp with his brother and his son, a New York Times writer, who will document the trip in this summer’s edition of Notre Dame Magazine. The entire excursion will take two months.
If John in fact summits Everest, he will be the 100th person to climb all 7 summits, including New Guinea’s remote Carstensz Pyramid.
We are thrilled to have John Rudolf on the AHD team! Stay posted on his progress by going to www.johnrudolf7summits.com.
This is a photo of Hospital Pedro Vicente Maldonado in rural Ecuador. It might look like kind of a boring building, but this hospital is in fact changing the face of health care in Latin America’s countryside. The hospital is financially self-sustainable, which means it will be here for the long-term. Read an earlier post to learn about financing of the hospital and how it maintains ‘break-even’ status. The hospital also houses a residency and nurse training program. This is another way this hospital lives on. The quality is of the hospital care is the best in Ecuador and no one is turned away. Below is a video from GE Health Care, who has brought technology to the rural hospitals of Honduras as part of its Developing Health Globally initiative, which began in Africa. In the past, GE has donated much needed equipment to Andean Health & Development in Ecuador. Similar to AHD, GE seeks to establish sustainable systems of health services delivery in Latin America.
